Equipping is developing Christian life skills.  When people trust in Christ there is a lot of stuff we need to learn, like how pray, how to read the Bible, share our faith and start living Christianly.  All good stuff.  But we take for granted that people pick these activities up naturally.  In truth they are learned behaviors and activities.  Each of us can learn and grow in Christian life skills, which even includes handling conflict, dealing with temptation, applying the Bible to our lives, being a Christian in the workplace, etc…

Paul put it this way in the book of Ephesians:

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole m easure of the fullness of Christ.

Ephesians 4:11-13

What is the point?  These giftings are for equipping the church for works of service or DOING the Word of God in community and in the world, which results in the church being built up into a unified group of believers who know Jesus and are mature in Him.  It’s not that these five offices are the only ones that do the equipping, but they are the leadership roles that create the church framework for people to help each other grow as Christians…

Each of us who has trusted in Christ has begun a journey to grow in our personal example of Christ over time, knowing and applying more of the Word of God to our lives.  But we grow at the pace we choose, IF in fact we have chosen a pace at all.  Renewal is a culture that seeks to intentionally help you learn how!
